The two armies were evolving in different directions. A Red Army mechanized and armored corps had a tank strength that was hardly equal to anyone else’s armored division, while for the Germans the situation was reversed. The hitting power of these super-units was wildly disproportional to their nominal identification as divisions, and was becoming only more so, since they received the latest tanks first.

The new vehicles were only just beginning to appear in quantity in 1943, but Hitler’s appreciation of their importance was not that wide of the mark. As we shall see, in combat they proved themselves deadly out of all proportion to their numbers. So by the start of Citadel, Hitler had an armored force whose hitting power was unlike anything the Germans had fielded in earlier offensives.
